RALEIGH - The state House passed a bill Wednesday that would
take guns away from those under domestic violence protective
orders, legislation inspired by a triple homicide in Orange
County last year in which a 2-year-old victim was shot execution
style. The bill now goes back to the state Senate for a technical
vote, and then to the governor for his signature.

with devices intended to prevent accidental shootings under
legislation approved Monday by the state Senate. The measure
by Sen. Jack Scott, D-Altadena, would require that the firearms
have either a chamber load indicator or a magazine disconnect
mechanism, starting with models produced in 2005. New handgun
models made after Jan. 1, 2007, would have to have both items.

WASHINGTON - Twenty of 22 federal gun laws are virtually ignored
across the nation, according to a report from a gun-safety group.
"If the federal government isn't going after the black
market and guns, then cities like Detroit are victimized by
the free flow of guns," said Matt Bennett, spokesman of
the Americans for Gun Safety Foundation, which conducted the
report. The Washington-based group supports gun rights and tougher
enforcement and stronger gun laws.

"Virtually every crime gun in the United States starts
off as a legal firearm," says Bradley Buckles, director
of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
When police recover a gun in connection with a crime and can
trace it back to its original, legal owner, they have a starting
place for following the chain of ownership - leading, if they're
lucky, right to the suspect they're looking for. Along the way,
they may be able to connect a gun to more than one crime, even
crimes in distant cities.
